Freezer Storage for a Beef Share

    Back to Journal

Bringing home a beef share is a small logistics project. A properly stored share holds quality for a year. Improperly stored, freezer burn starts in weeks.

    Buy the freezer first

A dedicated chest freezer is worth it. Uprights are convenient but lose more air on every open. A small chest freezer runs about $200 and pays for itself in a single share.

    Set it cold

Zero degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Buy a thermometer and check it. Warm freezers are the number one cause of freezer burn.

    Organize on day one

Group by cut type in labeled bins or paper bags. Ground beef, roasts, steaks, ribs. Rotate front to back, oldest first.

    What our packaging looks like

Every cut comes double-wrapped: an inner plastic layer plus butcher paper. That combination beats freezer burn for a year if the freezer stays cold.

    Power outage plan

A full chest freezer holds temperature for 48 hours if you do not open it. Keep the lid shut. Only open once, briefly, to check.

    After a year

Cuts are still safe indefinitely at zero degrees, but quality gradually declines. Eat through by month twelve for peak flavor.
